Urine Detection of Survivin and Diagnosis of Bladder Cancer

Article Abstract:

Measuring the amount of a protein called survivin in urine samples could detect new or recurrent bladder cancer. This was the conclusion of researchers who measured survivin in 158 people, some of whom had bladder cancer. Survivin was detected in all of the patients with bladder cancer but none of the healthy volunteers or patients with other types of cancer.

Ethical Implications of a New Application of Preimplantation Diagnosis

Article Abstract:

Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis should only be used to correct a potentially serious genetic disorder. This technique is used on conjunction with in vitro fertilization to select an embryo that is free from a genetic defect that occurs in the family. Only this embryo would be implanted into the woman's uterus.

Quinolones and False-Positive Urine Screening for Opiates by Immunoassay Technology. (Toward Optimal Laboratory Use)

Article Abstract:

Many quinolone antibiotics can cause a false-positive result on a urine test for opiate drugs. Levofloxacin, oflaxacin, and perfloxacin are most likely to cause a false-positive test result. All five of the current urine drug tests for opiates are affected by quinolone antibiotics.
