Using the biographical approach

Article Abstract:

The use of a biographical approach to nursing older people is a time consuming yet extremely rewarding method by which staff build up a picture of a patient's former life helping, to explain certain worrying traits and behaviour. Staff at a nursing home applied the technique to a women who had severe problems in letting go of a night gown and handbag. The biographical approach allowed nursing staff to understand her fears about being separated from her family and the death of her husband, which she had felt unable to talk about.

Discharging patients with burn injuries

Article Abstract:

Burns injury patients require an individual approach to discharge planning, with nurses taking into account aspects which will affect returning to home, such as psychological and physical problems. Nutritional information must be given to the patient to ensure resistance to infection does not jeopardize the healing process. Young burns injury patients should be encouraged to maintain close friendships with school mates, while family support is a vital part of the recovery process.

Third world patients with eye problems are being helped by the charity Orbis, which operates a flying eye hospital. Up to 25 people work on the project at any one time, visiting local hospitals, carrying out screening procedures and operating on those needing eye care. The medical staff are keen to pass on surgical practice advice to those doctors already working in extremely difficult condition, often performing operations which save the sight of someone.
