Vaccinated mice reject established tumors

Article Abstract:

Researchers at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, MA, found that fusion cell vaccines can be used in arresting the development and metastasis of cancer cells. The fusion cell vaccine comprised of dendritic cells and the nuclei of neoplastic cells generated immune responses. The vaccine was found to be effective in transgenic mice. Moreover, the researchers suggest that fusion cells may also prove to be effective in combating human tumors.

Brazilian research team advises against ALT testing

Article Abstract:

Brazilian researchers have suggested discontinuing the use of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) in testing blood for hepatitis C virus (HCV) in blood centers. The recommendation came after it was noted that ALT cannot efficiently detect carriers of transfusion-transmitted hepatitis viruses, particularly HCV, since some increases in ALT levels among prospective blood donors were deemed more likely due to noninfectious conditions.

New HIV-1 variant emerges in Cameroon

Article Abstract:

Francois Simon and his colleagues have discovered a novel HIV-1 variant which could escape detection by antibody-based tests. The variant, which belong neither to the main group or outlyer group, have infected a small number of Cameroon's population. The discovery has raised the possibility that the virus is actively emerging in humans and has prompted the need to establish public health implications for such concerns.
