Vaginal ultrasonography versus endometrial biopsy in women with postmenopausal bleeding

Article Abstract:

There appears to be a marginal cost savings in first using vaginal ultrasound rather than endometrial tissue sampling for evaluating abnormal bleeding among postmenopausal women. Decision trees were developed with data from published studies on vaginal ultrasound and endometrial biopsy. Cost savings using vaginal ultrasound ranged from $14 to $20. Calculations indicated that 55% of the patients evaluated with vaginal ultrasound and 28% of the patients evaluated with endometrial biopsy would require more extensive testing.

Procedures for pelvic organ prolapse in the United States, 1979-1997

Article Abstract:

About 200,000 American women have surgery to correct pelvic organ prolapse each year, according to researchers who analyzed data from the National Hospital Discharge Survey between 1979 and 1997. The number of operations for pelvic organ prolapse decreased during this time, from 2.2 per 1,000 women to 1.5 per 1,000 women. Prolapse means organs have moved from their normal position.

Reliability of health-related quality-of-life measures 1 year after surgical procedures for pelvic floor disorders

Article Abstract:

The reliability and validity of condition-specific health-related quality-of-life measures are assessed in women that were treated surgically for pelvic organ prolapse and urinary incontinence. The condition-specific health-related quality-of-life assessment is found to be reliable and valid in women after surgical procedures for pelvic floor disorders.
