Validity of self-reported intakes of wine, beer and spirits in population studies

Article Abstract:

The results of the frequency questionnaires compare well with diet history interviews on the intake of wine, beer and spirits with little variation for the three beverages among adult Danish people. Questionnaires are less time-consuming and expensive than personal interviews. The two methods' results were closer for men than for women and did not depen on social class, age and level of consumption. Drinking patterns have no influence on reporting of various types of alcoholic drinks by a frequency questionnaire.

The variation in blood lipid levels described by various measures of overall and abdominal obesity in Danish men and women aged 36-65 years

Article Abstract:

The proportion of variation in blood lipid levels, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, total cholesterol and very low density lipoprotein cholesterol were studied using overall obesity, percentage body fat, body mass index and abdominal obesity. Results show only a slight difference in the proportion of the variation in lipid levels as shown by the different measures of overall and abdominal obesity. Variation is explained better by overall than by abdominal obesity in men while the reverse is true in women.

Dietary fat and obesity: evidence from epidemiology

Article Abstract:

An epidemiological study of obese persons indicates that dietary fat is only a minor influence on fat accumulation in comparison with genetic factors. Most of the obese individuals have a family history of obesity. Energy density of the diet is an important factor in weight gain. Experimental evidences including those from cross-sectional and intervention studies for these observations are more concrete than the data from epidemiological studies.
