Vitamin A Deficiency Among Children--Federated States of Micronesia, 2000

Article Abstract:

Many children living in Micronesia have vitamin A deficiency. This is especially true in the states of Kosrae and Yap, which did not participate in vitamin A distribution programs that took place in Chuuk in 1993 and in Pohnpei in 1998.

Kernicterus in Full-Term Infants--United States, 1994-1998

Article Abstract:

All newborn babies should have their bilirubin measured to prevent kernicterus. Kernicterus is a neurological disease caused by excessive blood levels of bilirubin, a natural substance that is toxic at high levels.

Heat-Related Deaths--Los Angeles County, California, 1999-2000, and United States, 1979-1998

Article Abstract:

About 274 Americans die each year from hyperthermia, which occurs when body temperature rises above normal levels. Many of these deaths are preventable, and young children and the elderly are at greatest risk.
