Association of Inhaled Corticosteroid Use With Cataract Extraction in Elderly Patients

Article Abstract:

Long-term use of corticosteroids may increase the risk of cataract in the elderly. Researchers evaluated the use of corticosteroids by 3,677 elderly people who had cataract surgery and 21,868 people who had no history of cataract. The use of inhaled corticosteroids for more than three years tripled the risk of cataract development. Patients who used high doses of beclomethasone or budesonide were three times more likely to develop cataract within two years. Low- and medium-dose corticosteroids were associated with a lower risk of cataract.

Elevated parathyroid hormone-related peptide associated with lactation and bone density loss

Article Abstract:

Parathyroid hormone-related peptide (PTHrP) appears to be involved in the mobilization of calcium from bone to produce breast milk in new mothers. Researchers measured PTHrP and other chemicals involved in bone turnover in 115 women shortly after they gave birth and several times over the next 18 months. Over half the women who breastfed had elevated PTHrP levels during the first 6 months postpartum, compared to 6% or fewer of the women who did not breastfeed. Elevated PTHrP was also associated with changes in bone mineral density.
