Vitamin D status and parathyroid hormone concentrations in Chinese women and men from north-east of the People's Republic of China

Article Abstract:

A new study investigates the vitamin D status of young and old people living in Shenyang, China. The aim is to examine the relationship between vitamin D metabolites and parathyroid hormone in a population accustomed to low calcium intake. It is shown that the vitamin D status of males in this population is poor, especially in early spring. There is no obvious evidence to show that secretion of parathyroid hormone and the conversion of 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D are affected by the low 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration.

Raised urinary secretory IgA in chronic diarrhoea

Article Abstract:

Immunoglobulins (Ig), or antibodies, are proteins made by the body which are essential in fighting infections. One subclass of antibodies, secretory IgA, is found in most external fluids (such as saliva) and is important in defending the mucosal membranes. IgA levels are significantly decreased in the mouths and digestive tracts of children with varying degrees of malnutrition. This may be a reason for the high incidence of infection among malnourished children. However, in spite of poor nutrition, children may be able to respond to infections by increasing the intestinal levels of secretory IgA. To better understand this response, the levels of secretory IgA were studied in 24 malnourished, hospitalized Gambian children with chronic diarrhea and 43 children from a Gambian village. The village children were subdivided into four groups according to their nutritional status. Secretory IgA levels in urine were significantly lower in village children who were malnourished than in better-nourished children. In contrast, malnourished children with diarrhea (evidence of a gastrointestinal infection) had IgA outputs 6.8 times higher than those of malnourished village children and 2.3 times higher than those of well nourished children. IgA output did not correlate with gender or with the ratio of weight to height. The study indicates that in spite of malnutrition, secretory tissues in children can respond to gastrointestinal infection (diarrhea) by increasing production of secretory IgA. Vitamin D: seasonal and regional differences in preschool children in Great Britain

Article Abstract:

Research into vitamin D intake and status in a large group of British children aged between 1.5 years and 4.5 years has focused particularly on seasonal variations and on geographic location. There was found to be considerable regional variation in vitamin D intakes, with the lowest in Scotland. This variation was largest for overall vitamin D intakes, but was also substantial for food vitamin D intakes without supplements. Children who have relatively high vitamin D intakes are much less likely to show large seasonal variations in status than those with low intakes.
