Voice-overs

Article Abstract:

Hearing voices is often diagnosed as a symptom of schizophrenia and there are several cognitive ways to help suffers overcome their situation. Noise can be used to distract the sufferer when an episode of hearing voices begins. One of the most effective ways to reduce the effect of hearing voices is to read out aloud. Patients can reduce their anxiety levels which helps them interpret the sounds they hear more subjectively. The importance of hearing voices must not be over looked as it may help people deal with everyday life and stressful situations.

Covert participant observation in a secure forensic unit

Article Abstract:

Secure forensic units claim to provide a therapeutic community for mentally disordered offenders but this position is compromised by conflicts among groups of staff whose roles are either custodial or therapeutic, according to research. Patients who were covertly observed spent little time together as a community and spent most of their time alone watching television. Custodial staff apparently resent the concept of a therapeutic community as it is perceived as a threat to security.
