Oversight of the nation's medical care system may need to change as the system undergoes a rapid transformation. health care in the US is increasingly profit-driven, and the reductions in staff and cost-control measures that result have led some experts to call for changing the self-regulated oversight system now in place to one with better public accountability and participation. Others believe current methods are adequate, despite some well-publicized medical mistakes.

Article Abstract:

The quality of treatment for diabetes, depression and breast cancer can be measured by patient outcomes, according to a report from the Foundation for Accountability, a group representing health care consumers. The data should include results of questionnaires sent to patients. The National Committee for Quality Assurance already issues performance measures called the Healthplan Employer Data and Information Set, used by about 330 health plans.

A group of over 30 major employers will join with the government agencies that oversee Medicaid and Medicare plus the Jackson Hole Group, a think tank, to devise medical plan quality standards. The 'Foundation for Accountability' will concentrate on the outcomes of care. It will begin with four to six disease-specific guidelines.
