What women want from research; new emphasis to keep them well

Article Abstract:

The Society for the Advancement of Women's Health Research held in fall 1991 roundtable discussions to develop goals for women's health research in the 1990s. About 100 community leaders attended the meetings, which were conducted in Chicago, IL; Albuquerque, NM; and Raleigh, NC. The groups generally approved the priorities established by the Society in 1991. However, attendees added topics to the list of research needs, such as eating disorders, chronic pain and endometriosis. They also wanted the scientific community to emphasize preventative medicine more than finding cures to specific diseases.

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) received almost 4,000 calls within the first 36 hours after it announced plans to sponsor a study to determine if tamoxifen prevents breast cancer. The response was so overwhelming that the NCI expects to enroll the 16,000 study participants within two years rather than five as originally anticipated. The study will be conducted by the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project.
