When is prescribing not prescribing?

Article Abstract:

The issue of allowing UK nurses the legal right to prescribe medicines to patients is complicated by several key limitations, which prevent certain nurses from being classed as independent prescribing nurses. The only nurses who are allowed to prescribe are those who have experience in the field of midwifery, health visiting or district nurses and therefore do not need a second opinion before prescribing. Hospital nurses have to follow directions from a doctor, using set protocols which bind them legally to hospital rules.

Job prescription

Article Abstract:

A study has investigated General Practitioners' (GPs) attitudes to nurse prescribing. About 12 GPs from Hampshire and West Sussex, England participated. Most were aware of the government advisory board's recommendations and all agreed with the principle. Benefits included professional enhancement, time saving and increased job satisfaction. However, reservations included concern over accountability, communication problems and nurses' inadequate knowledge of drugs.
