Article Abstract:

Medical researchers are making considerable advances in identifying and studying the genes which cause conditions such as cystic fibrosis. However, some observers feel that these developments could create social problems if a regulatory framework is not established and the general public are not adequately informed. People whose genetic make-up renders them vulnerable to a particular condition need professional counselling to help them to come to terms with problems which could arise.

Staffing levels probe demanded at Treliske

Article Abstract:

The Cornwall Community Health Council is demanding an independent inquiry into organisation and staffing levels at Treliske Hospital, Truro, where nurse Valerie Tomlinson was recently cautioned for removing a man's appendix. The Council has contacted the regional health authority and the trust itself in order to review resources. The Royal Cornwall Hospital NHS Trust has denied any link between the recent appendectomy incident and staffing levels.

Shopping follies: the chief medical officer has stated that all health service staff have a duty to inform on colleagues' poor medical practice

Article Abstract:

UK Chief Medical Officer Kenneth Calman has said that health service staff should report poor medical performances by other staff members, including doctors. Calman also called for the General Medical Council to review its disciplinary procedures, and for the implementation of a mentoring system for all hospital staff. Unison's senior national officer believes that the report puts more emphasis on punishment than on support and prevention.
