Withdrawal from methadone maintenance: impact of a Tapering Network support program

Article Abstract:

A study found that Tapering Network support programs succeeded poorly in enabling heroin addicts being treated with methadone maintenance to stop using methadone without resuming the use of heroin. Tapering Network services include individual and group counseling every week. The study concerned 114 former heroin addicts in methadone maintenance of whom 58 received Tapering Network services while the control group of 56 received written assistance only. The Tapering Network group's 29% success rate in giving up methadone was not significantly better than the control group's 20% success rate.

Sexual partners of substance abuse clients: strategies for HIV/AIDS prevention

Article Abstract:

Practitioners of substance-abuse treatment should also consider the sexual partners of their clients to ensure the success of their HIV prevention programs. Possible administrative and clinical approaches to targeting sexual partners include developing a clinical policy on clients' sexual partners, offering written information and condoms, inviting applicants to bring a partner, making treatment accessible, and maintaining community ties and interagency liaison.

Family functioning as a predictor of progress in substance abuse treatment

Article Abstract:

The relation of family funtioning to progress in substance abuse treament was studied by assessing the levels of cohesion and adaptabilitty within the family and correlating this with the patient's functioning while in treatment. Family cohesion predicts the severity of a patient's disfunction due to substance abuse, family dilemmas and psychological problems. Thus, family factors are important in the treatment of patients who abuse drugs.
