Women with sickle cell trait are at increased risk for preeclampsia

Article Abstract:

Pregnancy and delivery complications, particularly preeclampsia, appear to be higher among women who not only have sickle cell disease but who carry the sickle-cell trait. Pregnancy complications were documented and blood tests were performed on 1,584 pregnant African-American women to identify those carrying the sickle cell trait. Nearly 25% of the 162 women positive for the sickle cell trait had preeclampsia while only 10.3% of those testing negative had preeclampsia. Significantly more sickle cell trait-positive women had lower birth weight infants, premature delivery, or had had preeclampsia in previous pregnancies.

Diagnosis of pulmonary embolism: A cost-effectiveness analysis

Article Abstract:

The study evaluated several diagnostic strategies to determine, which strategy was the most cost-effective with the least number of maternal deaths from pulmonary embolism (PE). The analysis suggests that because of higher sensitivity and specificity and relatively modest costs, spiral computed tomography is the preferred diagnostic strategy for suspected PE in pregnant women.

Oral glucose tolerance test and the preparatory diet

Article Abstract:

It is not necessary to give pregnant women a three-day preparatory diet before they are tested for gestational diabetes. The diet typically contains at least 150 grams of carbohydrate per day. A study of 20 pregnant women showed the glucose tolerance test produced similar results with or without the preparatory diet.
