Technology development and the poor/marginalised: context, intervention and participation

Article Abstract:

A study sought to analyze how technology development will be able to support poor and marginalized groups in developing economies who are earning a living from small/medium enterprises (SMEs). The study found that the social, economic and cultural contexts within which SMEs operate must first be understood and adapted to by these groups to enable them to fully benefit from technological learning. It further revealed that, although Participatory Technology Development (PTD) can help these groups understand these contexts, PTD must first be converted into a set of rules that poor and marginalized groups should follow to better extend their cycles of learning.

Sweden's technological profile: what can R&D and patents tell and what do they fail to tell us?

Article Abstract:

Research and development and patents have been used as technological indicators to gauge a country's contribution in technological cooperation programs. Sweden's technological indicators have been analyzed from 1963 to 1990 and shows that the country is specializing in metal/mechanical engineering and pharmaceuticals while lagging behind in the biomedical sciences. Further analysis shows that the indicators are inadequate in showing the advances made by Sweden in all of the sciences, especially with respect to its contributions to the technological activities of the OECD countries.
