Anita O'Day, known as "the Jezebel of jazz", was one of the first members of the 'cool school' of female vocalism in the big-band/swing scene of the 1940s, who enjoyed a rare respect among her African American colleagues. O'Day's husky legato style, particularly the vulnerable crack in her voice, was unique, partly because a botched tonsillectomy in childhood left her without a uvula and therefore without the ability to sustain a note.
