Ilya Kovalchuk was the first Russian-born player ever to be selected by the Atlanta Thrashers as the first overall selection in the National Hockey League (NHL) draft , and ever since he is recognized as one of the NHL's most prolific goal scorers. He has brought to the NHL a mix of skills and aggression and his method of slipping a puck past a goalie is instinctive.
