Michael S. Steele, a Maryland Republican Party activist, was elected as the first African-American to serve as the state's lieutenant governor on November 5, 2002. Steele's extensive public service includes his chairmanship of the Maryland State Minority Outreach Task Force and his work as a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).
