Nigerian-born geneticist and oncologist Olufunmilayo Olopade's ability to think in big and small ways as a researcher and physician, bridging intellectual zeal with patient advocacy establishes her as a leading voice in the international community. Olopade launched a series of landmark, cross-cultural studies in the 1990s to identify the nature of gene mutations in breast cancer, and found that women of African descent expressed different gene mutations than their Caucasian counterparts and stood at higher risk for more aggressive forms of breast cancer at younger ages.

Jim Yong Kim, Physician, public-health-service officer, and co-founder of Partners in Health

Article Abstract:

Physician and activist Jim Yong Kim co-founded the organization Partners in Health (PIH) when he was a student in the mid-1980s, to provide medical care to impoverished people in rural Haiti and, by 2006, PIH grew to address the medical needs of poor people in parts of seven countries. Kim, a native of South Korea, is an authority on the treatment of tuberculosis (TB), multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and demonstrates through PIH that attempts to treat these diseases, even in Third World countries, can succeed.
