Geologist James William Schopf was born on Sep. 27, 1941 in Urbana, IL, to James Morton Schopf and Esther Nissen. After showing a strong inclination towards science as a child, Schopf went to Oberlin College for his A.B. degree in geology. Graduating with honors in 1963, he pursued masters and doctorate degrees in biology at Harvard.
