Simmons is the first African-American woman to be named president of a prestigious college or university in the US. She has a PhD in Romance Languages, and began her academic-administration career in 1970. Simmons is one of 12 children who grew up in a poverty-stricken section of Houston, TX.

Sleeper, Ruth

Article Abstract:

Ruth Sleeper died on Dec 10, 1992. Sleeper was a nurse and educator who directed the nursing school at Massachusetts General Hospital from 1946 to 1966. She also worked with the federal government, the United Nations and the American Red Cross.
