Vonetta Flowers, Bobsledder

Article Abstract:

Vonetta Flowers became the first person of African descent to win a gold-medal at the Winter Olympics for the first ever women's bobsled competition at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah. Flowers was earlier a champion in track and filed events and had tried to make the Olympic team for the Summer Games but then joined the bobsledding team and made it to the Olympic team, winning the gold medal and inspiring people around the world with her perseverance.

Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, Translators

Article Abstract:

Pevear Richard, an American and Russian-born Larissa Volokhonsky are married since 22 years and widely recognized for their English-language versions of books written by Russian authors such as Dostoyevsky and Tolstoy. Pevear and Volokhonsky's interpretation of 'Anna Karenina', the first English version in 40 years, won the 2001 PEN/Book of the Month Club prize, unanimously praised by critics.
