The Australian opal rush of the 1890s gave miners and traders a unique desert experience. Among the fortune seekers were Tully Cornthwaite Wollaston and and E.F. Murphy who recorded the hardships, fun and rewards of those days in their respective books 'Opal: The Gem of the Never Never' and 'They Struck Opal.'

Devotion to opal

Article Abstract:

Australian opal became known worldwide mainly due to the efforts of Tully Cornthwaite Wollaston. Wollaston has been fascinated with gemstones even as a child growing up in his parents' sheep ranch in South Australia. He introduced opal to the world market, where it was warmly received by buyers.

Article Abstract:

Facetors John Bradshaw, Art Grant and Mike Gray banded together in 1987 to form a loosely formed organization instead of competing with each other. They found that grouping themselves gave them more latitude in buying and in managing their exhibit booths during trade shows.
