Bead sleuth

Article Abstract:

Collector, artist and researcher Jamey Allen has been working with beads for more than 25 years, investigating on imitation amber beads and making his own beads. One of Allen's creations is a finely patterned oblate beads in Fimo, an example of ancient glass beads recovered from the Viking period.

The practice of naming gems after persons creates difficulties for geologists and mineralogists. The myrickite is one such material and the mix-up about its true properties is compounded by vague references and incomplete data in literature.

The gem feldspars: a colorful menage a trois

Feldspar is more common than the quartz crystals. It is made up of sodium, calcium and potassium aluminum silicates. The spectrum of gem feldspars are analyzed and delineated.
