Xian Yeagan is an internal carver in quartz, topaz, aquamarine and beryl. With an abstract painter for a father, Yeagan learned the art as he helped his father mount puppet shows for neighborhood children. His first interior carving, a table with apples, jug of wine and candle, was made in 1976.

Gemstone engraver Hans Ulrich Pauly claims that he dreams of opening a lapidary school in the US to help keep the gem engraving tradition alive. As the son of Erwin Pauly, he grew up and learned his craft in Idar-Oberstein, Germany.
