The board of directors of a non-profit organization such as an economic development society should be able to steer the group into a common goal, derived by consensus, and serve as an effective mediator between staff and the rest of the members of the group. The strategic planning function is an important function of the board. It chooses priorities and defines specific activities which would be fleshed out by the operational and managerial staff into implementable programs.
