Diogo Gomes was a mariner in service to Portugal's Henry the Navigator whose voyage of discovery to Africa's Atlantic Coast in 1458 was intended to reach India. Commemorative stamps honoring Gomes have been issued by the Cape Verde Islands and by Dominica.

Uganda issued a stamp in 1992 to commemorate the achievements of explorer Richard Lemon Lander. He made three unsuccessful efforts to discover the source of the Niger River between 1825 and his death in 1834.
