Fifty years ago: how we looked and what we wrote back then

Popular Photography served the same purpose for photographers in Aug 1942 that it serves 50 years later. Some of the technical advice has changed over the years. The overall approach to providing photographers with useful advice as well as creative and practical information remains constant.

Article Abstract:

Popular Photography celebrates its fiftieth year of publishing with the Jul 1992 issue. Although all work in 1942 was reprinted in black and white, it offered, as it does now, useful information to photographers. It is amusing to note the cost of camera equipment at 1942 prices.

How we looked and what we wrote back then

Article Abstract:

A lenticular system which enabled the reproduction of 3-D photos was reported on in the Sep 1942 issue. At that time, the journal also provided tips on incorporating humor into photos and using a psychological approach to portrait photography.
