Several new joysticks enhance the game playing of flight simulation games, including CH Products' F-16 Combatstick, F-16 FlightStick, CH Throttle and Suncom Technologies' F-15E Eagle. The $69.95 F-16 Combatstick has the same durability of the F-16 Falcon but with an added hat switch and fire buttons. Its new look and tighter action warrants the upgrade from the F-16 Flightstick Pro. The $39.95 F-16 Flightstick is a sound economical alternative to the Combatstick. It offers four buttons and a rotary throttle, but lacks a hat switch. The $69.95 CH Throttle offers a fully programmable four-way hat switch, a two-way switch and seven buttons for extra realism in flight simulation games. The $199 Suncom Technologies F-15E Eagle is an actual replication of the F-15E fighter stick. It has four fire buttons and two four-way hat switches, which are all programmable. It is the best stick but at a significant cost.

Four new joysticks from three leading vendors are reviewed. Advanced Gravis Inc's Thunderbird aims to fix problems with the earlier Phoenix. It eliminates the awkward extension arm and adds a sturdy metal base, although it lacks some of the Phoenix's programmable buttons. The price of $49.95 is attractive, as are the ergonomics. Advanced Gravis also offers the excellent Firebird, an $89.95 joystick for the Mac that shares the Thunderbird's ergonomic design and has 21 programmable buttons. ACT Laboratories' $59.95 NovaStick Max offers 22 buttons, but it is flimsy and suffers from rough action. InterAct Accessories' PC Flight Force Control System offers separate controls for throttle and weapons and includes nine programmable keys with four program slots for flight simulators. Although there are no hardware indicators to confirm settings, the unit is sturdy and a good value at $59.95.
