Pegmatites intrigue many earth science hobbyists. Their contents of crystals of beautiful gem species or rare phosphates and other potential uses make them appealing to mineral collectors and gemologists. Pegmatites occur in many localities and may be simple or complex in composition.

Opal is unique among gemstones in its not being a crystal. Although its basic composition, silica and water, makes it soft, brittle, heat-sensitive and open to 'crazing,' it is highly valued and admired for its color variety. Opal is found mostly in Australia and Mexico.
