Portugal honors port cities of Lisbon and Madeira
Article Abstract:
The stamps commemorate the ports as safe havens for refugees including over 40,000 Jews during World War II. The threats from Spain's Franco and Portugal's Salazar to the 'impure people' seeking refuge was real however. Britain eventually sent 20,000 civilians from Madeira to Africa for safety.

Postal card honors Playmakers Theatre
Article Abstract:
The US Post Office will issue a 19-cent postcard depicting the Playmakers Theatre, a colonial building on the University of North Carolina campus, on Sept 14, 1993. The postcard is part of a bicentennial celebration of the university, which began construction in 1793.

Austria honors the Salzburg Franciscans
Article Abstract:
The Franciscan Order has been in the city of Salzburg, Austria since 1583. The stamp issued in its honor on Nov 18, 1994 depicts a wood carving from the church of the Order. A brief history is given of the Franciscans and the Salzburg church.
