3 days in Budapest

Article Abstract:

Budapest, Hungary boasts of several architectural marvels, harking back to the turn of the 19th century when the city equaled Paris, France, in elegance. Three of the best but underappreciated interiors in the city are the Music Academy, the Philanthia flower shop and the Divatcsarnok or the Fashion Hall. The Szabo Ervin public library, the Postal Museum and Applied Arts Museum are also deserving of a visit. Among restaurants with impressive designs are Cafe Kor, Lou Lou and Muzeum, while well-designed hotels include Kempinski Grand Hotel Corvinus, Astoria and Hotel Ar.

Preventing fatal facade failures

Article Abstract:

Masonry failures can be attributed to the design, materials, construction and maintenance of building facades. Engineers and architects must have adequate knowledge on masonry engineering and must not rely on appearance. Masonry veneer requires necessary stainless steel connectors for relatively high buildings. Another important factor to consider is the compliance with the 'Building Code Requirements for Masonry Structures' although its regulations are not consistent in requiring the inspection of buildings involving masonry works.
