Rediscovering ancient Nubia

Article Abstract:

Nubia is an ancient and prehistoric civilization that began in the Nile and hugged the southern part of Egypt. Nubian civilization has been foreshadowed by Egyptian civilization, but artifacts mined here rival those of ancient Egyptians in terms of grace, beauty and simplicity.

Professional artist Susan Tereba has found a new way to express her artistic prowess through jewelry inspired by the Bali culture. She uses images of women and wild creatures to depict transformation of the inner spirit. Her pieces are generally carved out of mammoth ivory.

Revolutions in stone

Lapidary Tom Finneran has achieved acclaim for his lathe-turned stone and stone-and-glass sculpture. He learned gem cutting as an apprentice to jeweller Lew Wackler, but his art also shows the influence of his childhood love of glass art.
