Getting a rough start

Article Abstract:

Materials for gem carving should not contain large fractures or heavy inclusions which cannot be removed. Stones with medium hardness and poor cleavage are good candidates for carving. Large coarse wheels can be used to grind areas that are clouded, poorly colored or heavily fractured.
