Aeronautical engineer Juan de la Cierva invented rotary wing aircraft, which became the predecessor to the helicopter. The aircraft of de la Cierva first flew on Jan 8, 1923. The design for de la Cierva's aircraft became the basis for the helicopters designed by Igor Sikorsky.
