Tucson turns 50: As the Tucson Gem and Mineral Society show celebrates its golden anniversary with a plethora of gold, the surrounding shows offer an embarrassment of riches

30 gem, jewelry, bead, mineral, and fossil shows are held every year at Tucson, with 3,000 vendors and 50,000 buyers. The mining consultant Gordon Austin says that Tucson is always a success and never seems affected by the industry, the economy, or social and political situations.

Hilltribe silver

In the hills of Thailand, a small village of the Karen hilltribe produces beautiful handmade silver beads and other Jewelry parts. The designs created by Karen are of 99.9 percent fine silver of fish, butterfly or leaf design that distinguishes itself from sterling.

Bead jeweler Lezlie Levitt creates intricately detailed beads by adding layers of glass. Levitt has a diverse range of inspiration, as evidenced by a group of beads containing finely bending mauve irises and lampworked beads with floral patterns and landscapes.
