What's so passive about passive AF?

Article Abstract:

Passive AF works by analyzing a scene and adjusting for sharpness rather than using a near-infrared beam. Passive AF can cause problems in the dark or when photographing a distant scene. Tips for taking photos with a passive AF camera are presented.

Casual point-and-shoot photographers should not use a flash at night because the flash, like a lamp, is effective for only about 15 feet. Scenes to shoot with slow shutter speeds include sunsets, moving traffic, and moving water.
