Why the camera makers built a lensmount Tower of Babel
Article Abstract:
There is no compatibility in AF SLR lensmounts because lens sales are a source of profit for camera makers. Technical differences are another barrier. In the 1970s the Universal M42 screw-thread mount was the standard, but standardization disappeared with the advent of bayonet lensmounts.

Photographer Don Cochran used a Noblex rollfilm panoramic camera at the opening ceremonies of the 1996 Olympics. Kodak technicians digitized the photos and enhanced them electronically. A 30x50-foot Duratrans transparency of the Olympics shot was displayed on Broadway in New York, NY.
