A host of hollies: a sampler of these decorative trees and shrubs

Article Abstract:

Twelve varieties of holly are described. The familiar varieties are Ilex aquifolium and Ilix crenata, also know as English and Japanese holly. Other varieties include Sunny Foster, with all yellow leaves, Winterberry, which loses its leaves to reveal bright red berries, and Canary, with yellow berries.

The unbending gardener

Article Abstract:

A woman begins to plan a new garden when she discovers that her aging back can no longer bend as it had. To avoid bending, she eliminates flowers needing a lot of weeding and uses more mulch. Planning for future growth, she removes many plants and fills their spaces with more appropriate ones.

Taking to the woods: a resourceful gardener learns to plant beneath big trees

Article Abstract:

A gardener describes how she changed a tangled brush-filled woods on her property to a beautifully landscaped forest. First she had to clear the brush and build raised beds over the roots of the trees. She also improved the soil and sought out plants that thrived in the shade.
