A pleasance for all

Article Abstract:

The gardening advice industry may discourage people from taking up gardening by making it appear less of a hobby and more of a scientific endeavor. A plain plot of land and easy-to-grow plants may be all that is required for a garden, but books, soil-test kits, chemicals and constant advice make the task seem daunting to many. Gardens should be a place to get away from such evils.

In harmony with nature

Article Abstract:

Talking and singing to plants does sometimes appear to help them and can certainly improve the mood of the gardener. The author describes her experiences, first with a billbergia that refused to flower until finally commanded, then with her other plants. Selecting appropriate songs for each is entertaining but possibly annoying to nearby neighbors.

Fauna in my flora

Article Abstract:

Animals can enrich a garden, or at least a gardener's experiences, as well as prey upon the plants themselves. The author relates several stories about chipmunks stealing ripe tomatoes, a 12-point buck deer eating antique Dutch bulbs, and a large box turtle intimidated out of its territory by a realistic statue.
