Acquisition of female apparel in Oklahoma's Indian Territory, 1850-1910

Article Abstract:

A research study was conducted to obtain an understanding of the manufacture, acquisition and use of female clothing in Oklahoma's Indian Territory, in the period between 1850 and 1910. The study was based on interviews conducted in the 1930s with Indians and non-Indians who settled down in Oklahoma in the 19th century. Results indicate that though reliance on commercially produced fabric increased gradually, sewing continued to be important throughout the period. The study also indicates that the acquisition of clothes by members of a community is related to various historical and environmental factors.
