Aleutian shield fern

Article Abstract:

The Aleutian shield fern is Alaska's only native plant on the federal endangered species list and, with roughly 130 known plants, one of the rarest in N America. WJ Eyerdam and Eric Hulten discovered it in 1932 on Atka Island; Carl Christensen described and named it Polystichum aleuticum in 1938. It may be a relic from an earlier period, isolated by glaciers. It now suffers somewhat from grazing by caribou and reindeer introduced since 1914, from collecting, and from erosion caused by visitors to the area.

Prairie fringed orchids

Article Abstract:

The eastern and western prairie fringed orchids, listed federally as Platanthera leucophaea and P praeclara respectively, are among the seven native orchids listed as threatened or endangered. Known as a species pair, the two lie dormant in winter, and flower after high precipitation or winter prairie fires. The large white flowers appear in June or early July. The two varieties are threatened by overgrazing, fire control, drainage, and intensive hay mowing; much of their habitats have become cropland.

Nohoanu

Article Abstract:

Nohoanu (Geranium multiflorum) is an endangered species native to the Maui island of Hawaii. Also called hinahina, its 11 known populations range from swamps and wet forests to lava flows. The multibranched shrub stands 8-12 in tall with gray to reddish stems, oval green leaves, and white and purple compound flowers. Yellow-faced bees (Nesoprosopis) may be its chief pollinator. Fewer than 3000 plants remain thanks to previous assaults by goats and the more recent invasion of escaped rabbits.
