Nancy Heckler has combined practicality and beauty in Oyster Point Gardens, which is located above Washington's Puget Sound. Her diverse landscape includes organically grown fruits and vegetables, annuals, perrenials and tropical flowers. Healthy native trees and shrugs are part of the garden design.

Six Organic Gardening readers describe their experience farming in difficult climates. Cold climate areas such as Alaska and Northern New York are included, as are hot areas such as Texas and Oklahoma. The high elevation and cold temperatures also make gardening difficult in the Colorado Rockies.

Home-cooked soups consist of vegetables grown in summer and preserved, stocks, thickeners or starches, and flavorings. Vegetable stock can be substituted for meat-based stock by simmering and straining vegetables. Flavorings, also, can come from garden herbs and other plants.
