Bugging off

Article Abstract:

Gardeners should make informed decisions when choosing methods to repel insects. The active ingredient in most mosquito repellents is absorbed through the skin and may cause potentially dangerous side effects. Citronella oil and neem tree oil are less toxic alternatives but may not work as well. Biting flies, midges, and ticks are also pests that pose a threat to gardeners, and it is recommended that people with outdoor lifestyles be vaccinated against lyme disease.

What's in

Article Abstract:

Hundreds of plants are introduced to the market every year. Some are sold through seed catalogs, others in nurseries. This year gardeners will have new choices of Salvia colors in addition to bright red, such as burgundy, lavender, purple and white. There are also new perennials, including four epimediums from China, and new species of shrubs and trees, including a rare hydrangea species from Japan.
