Cheaper than dirt

Article Abstract:

An urban vegetable gardener in Detroit, MI, managed to overcome siliceous clay, poor sod and a sloping lawn all by using newspapers. Water run-off on the sloping area, coupled with hard sod/clay layers, prevented any true manipulation of the land. Newspapers, though, sometimes a foot thick, improved both water retention and drainage, and provided a compost pile in which vegetables flourished. Papers are biodegradable, cheaper than good soil, and easier to come by.
