Export competition in the man-made fiber industry

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to examine competition in the synthetic fibers industry among the biggest exporting regions of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Subject OECD regions for the study were the EC, other OECD Europe, the US, Japan and the combined region of Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The study focused only on OECD synthetic fibers exports from 1975 to 1986. Marcov analysis, which was used to determine the market shares of the exporting regions, revealed that the US always topped the other regions in synthetic fibers exports.

Four types of entrepreneurs who successfully developed tourist and export markets in the handcraft industry are identified in Oaxaca, Mexico. The approaches of these Mexican businessmen can be categorized as externally oriented, mass production entrepreneurs, internally oriented, local showroom entrepreneurs, outdoor market entrepreneurs and design entrepreneurs. In contrast, US midwestern manufacturing entrepreneurs consist of only two types, the adaptive firm and the rigid firm entrepreneurs. The producer-entrepreneur roles are also analyzed.

Aesthetics, workmanship, function and use, and strong sensory or affirmative attachment are important ingredients sought by buyers of fibers, clay and wood craft products. Five consumer profiles for fiber crafts and four for both clay and wood are developed.
