Unlikely havens

Article Abstract:

Nature Conservancy botanists have discovered new and rare species of plants while inventorying government property. Wildlife and plants on US Dept of Defense land holdings were cataloged under a 1988 agreement with the agency. Longleaf pine plant communities were found on military bases in North Carolina. A 1991 agreement with the US Dept of Energy allowed scientists to examine a shrub-steppe habitat in Washington.

Asian beetles bore trees to death

Article Abstract:

The Asian long-horned beetle presents a distinct threat to US forests. Their larvae bore into living trees, eventually killing them. They may have entered the US inside wooden crating material, and have been found in maple, birches, elms, poplars and willows. Infestations are controlled through area firewood quarantines and the removal and burning of infested trees.
