Chasing the grant dragon

Article Abstract:

The grant application system in British higher education positively encourages the frenetic, craving behaviour associated with gambling addiction. Academics become totally preoccupied with trying to secure research funding from the grant-awarding bodies, encouraged by the kind of 'near win' or 'just missed' enticements that create moral panic in the context of commercial gambling. Grant-awarding bodies incite pathological repetitive behaviour by shortlisting or highly commending applicants, encouraging them to believe that their next application will be successful.

Helping caregivers confront nursing home challenges

Article Abstract:

Institutionalization of an elderly individual poses stress on both the family and the elder. The move is usually precipitated by a crisis in the family such as a change in functional or cognitive functions of the elder or an accident. The elder has to adjust to new surroundings. The family may feel guilty about the move. Caregivers must understand these situations by being informed about the aging process, family dynamics and institutional life. Active care even after institutionalization is also important.
