Article Abstract:

The understanding of the family heirlooms, not in terms of dollars, but in the sacrifices made to obtain them, brings previous generations' hopes and dreams vividly to life. The Cavalier Corporation were the best makers of chests and the cedar chests, using marriage-related labels and advertising that symbolized an idyllic view of home life to entice parents into buying a chest for their little girl, usually when she was about 14 years old.
